Abstract

The history of mentalities emerged from the historiography of the Annal School and is an important branch of the trend of cultural history, but it was not limited in those frameworks and found several branches. Today, the history of emotions and the history of emotions are actually the fruit of the history of mentalities, and each gradually finds an independent mechanism. The main axis of the history of mentalities, which was started by Fevbre and Bloch, two of the founders of the Annal School, is to examine the influence of culture on other aspects of life. The main assumption of the historians of this historiographical approach is that there are cultural macro-plans on which there is the most agreement among the members of a society and people engage in cultural action within its boundaries. Critics, while praising the comprehensive approach of this history, which includes different strata of society without any distinction, have criticized the coercion and imposition hidden in this assumption. Undoubtedly, the history of mentalities, focusing on the sometimes invisible and mostly neglected role of culture on political, economic and social actions, provides a novel image of the past. This essay, in a descriptive way, seeks to obtain definitions of the history of mentalities, introduce the historians and famous works of this school, and propose some criticisms to it.
