Abstract
From its representation as a visual element in ancient Eastern art to the glorious period of Safavid art, animals are the most viewed object in literary and art works. The apparent similarity between animal motifs in Kashan carpets and Tahmasbi Shahnameh of the Safavid period is an issue that strengthens the hypothesis that it is possible that since Safavid artists worked in common art workshops. The purpose is to present the mythological concept of animal motifs in Kashan carpets and Tahmasbi Shahnameh of the Safavid period in understanding the role of animals in our culture and tradition. The questions raised in this article are: What is the relationship between mythological beliefs in the drawing of animal motifs in Kashan carpets and Tahmasbi Shahnameh of the Safavid period? What similar thematic and visual features are there in the animal motifs of Kashan carpets and Tahmasabi's Shahnameh? This writing is done in a historical-analytical qualitative way with a comparative approach and the results show that although there are many similarities in thematic and visual features in the images of animal motifs in the Kashan carpets and the Tahmasbi Shahnameh, which shows that Safavid artists imitated each other's artistic style in the same way, but the marked distinctions are often related to the different texture of the Chinese carpet knot. On the other hand, according to mythological beliefs, the presence of the role of animals carries the message of protection in art and culture of this period, and suggest the transcendental positive energies.
