Abstract

Considering that environmental education, especially primary and secondary formal education, has an impact on people's socialization, and taking into account that the content of textbooks is a full- fledged mirror and the main determinant of government policy in the field of education, this research with the help of quantitative content analysis of textbooks of the fifth grade of elementary school and the third grade of orientation school of the 1360s/1980s (years 1982, 1986 and 1990), tries trying to show the contribution of the environment and its protection in textbooks and subsequently in formal education. In addition, this article tries to find out what factors influenced the thinking of curriculum planners and textbook authors. The results of the study show that only two percent of the total textual content of the books studied deals with environmental protection, and among the triple levels of knowledge, attitude, and skill of these books, 78% is at the level of knowledge (awareness), 1% is for the level of attitude and  9% at the level of  skill. In addition, the largest amount of environmental data is found in books such as geography, experimental science and technology &Vocation. This may indicate the dominance of experimental thinking in the eyes of curriculum designers in the field of environmental education.
