Abstract

An investigation on Iranian earlyIslamic historiography sources indicates that historiography in ancient Persia had a prominent positionas it remarkably achieved incredible and unique initiatives in its own kind on that particular era. One example of such innovation was combining historiography and painting in creating the pictorial and illustrated works that reached to its peak in Sassanid era.One of the most important examples of such creative combination is the pictorial history of "Ketab- Al Sovar" or "BaniSasan's Soorat-ul- Molouk". Analyzing Islamic texts and sources, the present study attempts to review themes, identity and nature of such visual historiography as well as discover its different dimensions and significance in understanding the history of Sassanid. Also encoding unique characteristics of this type of historiography, the study seeks to clarify the position of this type of historiography in Sassanidera.
